The State Belt Railroad of California
The State Belt Railroad was a short line that connected
the docks on the East side of the city with the industries
of the city. It went from the Southeast edge of the city to
the north central area near North Beach and the Presidio
which lies at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. In the
1930's the railroad was operated by the State of California,
which also owned the Port of San Francisco. It was later
operated by the City of San Francisco after the port was
placed in city ownership and took on the name San
Francisco Belt Railroad.
Our cars represent the railroad as it was in the 1930's. The
cars are perfect behind a Docksider or an 0-6-0 as the
railroad operated both tank and 0-6-0 switchers. Flat cars
are just about the only type of car the State Belt Railroad
owned, but they moved a lot of other cars of the Southern
Pacific, Western Pacific, and Santa Fe. One car is numbered
1937 for the year the bridge opened and the other is
numbered 2027 the year when the 90th Anniversary of that
opening will be celebrated. The bridge was constructed
between 1934 and 1937.

The cars will come in a
commemorative specially decorated box, as shown below,
making it a unique item for your collection.

About
our Club
The purpose of the club is to promote
interest, fellowship and cooperation among persons interested in any
facet of American Flyer S Gauge Model Railroading, including
collecting and operating. Many of our members also have an
interest in other Gilbert products and pre-Gilbert
American Flyer.
We were originally founded in 1970 as the East
and West Bay S gauge Model Railroad Club. Today the Golden Gate American
Flyer Club is group of American Flyer enthusiasts from all parts of
the San Francisco Bay Area. We also have members in other
parts of Northern California and even outside the state.
We have a modular group within our club which
displays its modules at various train shows in Northern California.
See our
Facebook page for some photos of our latest presentations at
local train shows.
Every three years we sponsor Flyerfest West.
In other years, we coordinate with the
Sacramento Valley American Flyer Club's Flyerfest West and the Southern
California S-Gaugers, who sponsor S-Fest West. Both of these
take place in the each of the two years between our Flyerfests.
We hold official monthly in person meetings at the homes of
our members, most often on Friday night or Saturday
afternoon. Those meetings can also be attended via
Zoom. We also have an additional informal Zoom
meeting on the first Sunday evening of the month.
A business meeting
is conducted but the meetings also provide a chance to visit and enjoy
the layouts of fellow members. Meetings usually feature a show and
tell session and members are encouraged to bring items for sale. Click on the "Meetings" above for
details.
